Septic System Inspection

When purchasing a new home, or any property that has a septic system here in Southwest Florida, it is important for you to schedule a home inspection. In most cases this is required by a lender. Picture of Septic Tank System DiagramEven if the home inspector says they will check out the septic system, you really should schedule Martin Septic to inspect the system. During our inspection, Martin Septic will locate and pump the septic tanks, yes some properties can have more than 1!

Once the tank is pumped and cleaned, we are then able to perform an inspection of the tank looking for any signs of deterioration or possible corrosion. We also check to make sure the tank is structurally sound and water tight. The tank size, type of tank (concrete, fiberglass or poly), and integrity of tank will be noted on the inspection form. Other details include whether the tank is baffled and outlet filter or deflection device is present. The pumping portion of the inspection can be waived by the customer. However, without pumping, the technician cannot attest as to whether the tank can be certified. We can inspect and certify residential and commercial septic systems.

Septic Tank Certification

Once the tank is pumped, the technician will begin inspecting the drain field. The technician will run water to the drain field from the outlet end of the septic tank for approximately 20-30 minutes. During this time he will ensure the drain field is accepting water and functioning properly at the time of the inspection. According to the EPA, a properly designed and installed drain field should work for approximately 17 years.

Picture in your mind a sponge and how it absorbs water. Once the sponge is saturated, there is no place for the water to go. A drain field works the same way, once saturated it will begin backing up into the home. The technician will note drain field material/type. If repairs to your septic system are required, you will receive a written report detailing the suggested repairs.
